Network infrastructures safety is a major issue in structural engineering. Developed world countries strongly depend upon efficient behaviour of transportation, telecommunication, energy, hospitals and immaterial networks. The seminar frames the problem within the risk perspective, with special reference on seismic risk. Networks are catalogued, and real world applications concerning structural safety and retrofitting of such systems are given, showing the conceptual steps to quantify their reliability. Economic optimization is also introduced.

Prof. Ivo Vanzi received his degree in Civil Engineering in 1990 from the University of Naples "Federico II". He is reviewer for several international journals and research funds. He is a member of several professional structural engineering associations. He took part in several "Programmi di ricerca di interesse nazionale", PRIN, financed by the Italian Research Ministry and was the scientific responsible of research contracts with public and private bodies. He is also a consultant on topics linked with his research activity. His research activity, with over 150 published papers.
